Charter Fishing and Tipping

Charter Fishing Tipping

Do you tip the Captain?  On 1 man Charter Boat operation.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     This question comes up a lot. Do you tip the Charter Captain, and if so, how much?  Well, there has been a lot of articles written on this subject and many opinions on it to.  Most charter boat tipping articles pertain to big boats that utilize a 1st Mate.   They do everything from rigging, baiting, cleaning and getting everything ready for that  day of fishing.  When you are on a 4 or 5 or more-person charter that’s a lot of work for the 1st mate.   No matter what, even if the fishing didn’t go the way you would like, they still did a lot of work for you. The normal tipping rate for the 1st Mate would be 20% of the total charter cost.

Small Charter Boat Operations

Do You Tip The Captain?

Now we have a different situation.  You go on a different type of Charter, say Niagara River in Western NY to do so Small Mouth Bass Fishing. You have a Captain and your party 2 or 3 people in a boat.  No 1st mate.  Do you tip the Captain?  1st let me tell you something. There is a lot of preparation that goes into a charter fishing trip for a day of fishing. Gas, Bait, rigging of rods or making sure the one that were used previously are in good working order. That is not including making sure all safety checks are done EVERY TIME OUT so right there is a lot of time spent just getting everything ready for your Ultimate fishing adventure with 1st Choice Fishing Charters. Now the old saying is you do not need to tip the owner of a company but in this Instance, it is perfectly fine to tip the owner of the company because this Captain has done everything that needs to be done. They do not have a 1st Mate to help with the rigging or baiting of the lines or netting the fish so it is done properly and even go as far as cleaning the fish for you and packaging your catch so you enjoy your fishing adventure.  Again, the normal would be 20% of the cost of the charters even if you had a not so good of catching day but the captain should have done all that is possible for that situation he/she still deserves a tip. Now on the other hand if you feel Like you were treated like a MILLION BUCKS (AS YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN) 20% or more is good sound advice. At least you will be treated as such with 1st Choice Fishing. The Captain on Smaller boat are doing the work of 2 men well most anyway.  Tips are SO MUCH GREATLY APPRECIATED we work our butt off and that is the truth.

Thank You all for your time I hope this sheds some light on the subject.

  1. ” Tips are so much greatly appreciated we work our butt off, and that is the truth.” That’s true. The captain and the first mate both deserve a tip, a good one for all the hard work they do. A great blog!
